A History of Lumsden Battery CSA George Little 9783847213307 Books

This history of Lumsden's battery was written in 1905 by two individuals who had served in it. The first, a doctor, wrote the first half of the history up to the battle of Chattanooga using a diary written during the war by a third soldier. The last half of the war was written from memory by a soldier who joined the battery in the summer of 1863. The two authors makes for a very awkward transition and it really feels like two separate histories as the writing styles are so different. The first part does feel like it was cribbed from a not-very detailed diary and it is not very interesting reading. While there are some good anecdotes, it is too much of marched here then here then camped here. The second half is much more readable and is full of interesting details of camp life, foraging, and battles.

The battery served at Mobile until after Shiloh and then joined the Army of Tennessee. It served with it through the retreat from Nashville and it then returned to Mobile and saw action at Spanish Fort. It was raised in Tuscaloosa county and the book does contain some interesting details about raising and supplying Confederate regiments. While I recommend the work mainly for the second part, the uneven first half keeps it at this rating.

An OK read but one for the specialised readrer only.
Really not a general interest type of book at all
Well done eyewitness account to a Civil War artillery unit. Easy read and very informative. Recommended for those who like first-hand accounts
