The New York Times best-selling author of Dead with the Wind and Bless Her Dead Little Heart is back with more of those sleuthing Southern belles, the Ducote sisters.

An'gel and Dickce Ducote, busy with plans for the Athena Garden Club's spring tour of grand old homes, are having trouble getting the other club members to help. The rest of the group is all aflutter now that dashing and still-eligible Hadley Partridge is back to restore his family mansion. But the idle chatter soon turns deadly serious when a body turns up on the Partridge estate after a storm.

The remains might belong to Hadley's long-lost sister-in-law, Callie, whom everyone thought ran off with Hadley years ago. And if it's not Callie, who could it be? As the Ducotes begin uncovering secrets, they discover that more than one person in Athena would kill to be Mrs. Partridge. Now An'gel and Dickce will need to get their hands dirty if they hope to reveal a killer's deep-buried motives before someone else's name is mud.

I love Miranda James' (aka, Dean James) books. All of them. But I thought that this current 'Southern Ladies' stories was the best to date. I hadn't a clue as to who the murderer was, to start with. We were definitely kept guessing to almost the very end. But, too, I loved it because it also addressed the issue of racial prejudice that still, to some extent, exists in today's America. No matter how lily white I am, it is something I have always abhored.

Excellent work, Mr. James. Your stories just get better and better.

Digging Up the Dirt (Audible Audio Edition) Miranda James Jorjeana Marie Audible Studios Books Reviews

Definitely had surprises. These two woman are annoying, but grow on you after awhile. The two animals aren't in the story much, so isn't a cat mystery. My favorite cat Diesel had a minor part and can't wait for his new one. Somebody needs to do a better job of proof reading. Kept mixing up character's names Hadley for Hamish and vice versa.
A good story, not highly intense. I like the lack of gratuitous sex and swearing. My main complaint is that Benjy and the Ducote sisters all seem to act and talk as if they are much younger than their stated ages. It's especially noticeable with Benjy He speaks and acts like a young adolescent than a 19 year old.
Miranda James has a way of writing and Dan Craig has a way of illustrating that can make a person fall in love with animal characters. In this series, my pet of choice is Peanut the doodle dog, so it is nice to have him be a part of the plot. There is a lot of dirt that is dug up in Book 3 and it makes for a timely story that does keep the reader sleuthing to the end. These Southern Ladies are busy seniors!
Digging Up the Dirt, like all of the Miranda James books, was over way too soon because I simply could not put it down. The elderly Ducote sisters are a delightful pair and probably the least likely detectives out there. With the help of the usual friends, the two manage to unravel a current mystery as well as one that's 40 years old. Loved it!
Wow, the Sisters latest adventure was just amazing! Reading these books make me long for cool spring days on the porch with a glass of sweet and a cozy mystery!
As I followed the Sisters and Benjy on their latest case, I caught myself saying, "well, I didn't expect that"! And we got to see Charlie and Diesel this time for just a brief moment.
I really had to fight the urge to read ahead, but without reading each page, it would not have made it near as much fun and attention holding!
Cozy fans will love this one for sure!
When Hadley Partridge left Athena forty years ago, he left a trail of broken hearts behind including (perhaps) his sister-in-law Callie who disappeared shortly after Hadley left. Now, after all these years, Hadley is back in town stirring up long buried emotions in several of Athena's residents. When the skeleton of a body turns up on Hadley's estate, An’gel and Dickce Ducote wonder if Callie has at last been found and when a more recent death occurs they begin to wonder if there is a murderer on the loose. As the Ducotes, along with Deputy Kanesha Berry, begin to investigate they discover that whoever killed forty years ago is desperate enough to kill again.

“Digging Up the Dirt” is the very enjoyable third book in Miranda James’s (James is the pseudonym for author Dean James) Southern Ladies cozy mystery series. I just love An’gel and Dickce – sisters who are in their eighties, who are healthy, feisty, smart, full of energy, and who love each other even if they can't help needling each other at times. Equally as delightful as both An’gel and Dickce are, is their ward Benjy (who could use a bit of an edge as he is almost too good to be true), their dog Peanut, and their cat Endora. Adding to the interesting characters in this book are the members of the Garden Club (who all seem to still be infatuated with Hadley), Hadley himself (who may be harboring more than one secret), Mrs. Turnipseed (I love that name!), and other various characters who pop up in the book (fans of James’s Cat in the Stacks cozy mystery series will be happy to know that Charlie Harris and his cat Diesel do appear briefly in this book). The mystery is well plotted with plenty of twists and turns, red herring's and at least one major surprise. Even the ending, which is textbook cozy mystery style, has a surprise.

“Digging Up the Dirt” is a nice cozy mystery by the always enjoyable Miranda James.
The interior structure of the Earth is layered in spherical shells, like an onion. I think that Digging Up the Dirt has hit every level of earth whether you believe it is comprised of 3, 4, 5 or 7 layers. This 3rd entry in the Southern Ladies Mystery series kept me engaged from the beginning albeit the set up sprinkled with clever repartee or just establishing who is who and what they are. The Ducote sisters, An'gel and Dickce, are some kind of pistols and prove that age is simply a state of mind and their skill sets complement each other more than rub up against each other. Nothing like bringing an old heart throb (Hadley) to the community via the Garden Club, add some competitive women vying for his attention and the questions from the past about unexplained disappearances , sibling rivalry . Throw in the Sisters, Benjy, their ward, Kanesha , their local Deputy, unexplained accidents and a body that shows up after a storm by the Partridge mansion and you have enough rope to try and unravel this latest riddle. Oh, I promise you will not be disappointed in this Southern Charmer!
